A royal woman may or may not be free to select her ladies, and, even when she has such freedom, her choices are usually heavily influenced by the sovereign, her parents, her husband, or the sovereign's ministers (for example, in the Bedchamber crisis). Lady-in-waiting or court lady is often a generic term for women whose relative rank, title, and official functions varied, although such distinctions were also often honorary. In courts where polygamy was practised, a court lady was formally available to the monarch for sexual services, and she could become his wife, consort, courtesan, or concubine. In other parts of the world, the lady-in-waiting, often referred to as palace woman, was in practice a servant or a slave rather than a high-ranking woman, but still had about the same tasks, functioning as companion and secretary to her mistress. Although she may either have received a retainer or may not have received compensation for the service she rendered, a lady-in-waiting was considered more of a secretary, courtier, or companion to her mistress than a servant. Historically, in Europe, a lady-in-waiting was often a noblewoman but of lower rank than the woman to whom she attended. Princess Tatiana Alexandrovna Yusupova, a lady-in-waiting of the Imperial Court of RussiaĪ lady-in-waiting (alternatively written lady in waiting) or court lady is a female personal assistant at a court, attending on a royal woman or a high-ranking noblewoman. However, their primary meanings are generally consistent with the time period in which they are used. Humanism is often associated with related words such as “humanist,” “humane,” “humanities,” and “humanitarian.” Words may sometimes have dual meanings. Humanism is often confusing to people because the primary meanings of many of its basic words have changed. Humanistic Terms Often Need Clarification Finally the seriousness of humanism will be demonstrated by noting its progress in its opposition to Christianity. Major philosophical concepts of humanism will be briefly noted, after which terms that modify humanism will be discussed. Humanism will be shown to be a method for making decisions. To help clarify this lack of understanding, “humanism” and some of its related terms will be defined within their historical and philosophical contexts and some short working philosophical definitions of modern humanism will be given. Many who do use the term do not sufficiently understand its ideals and concepts. The term “humanism” has been around since the Renaissance, although only recently has the man on the street began to use it. Even so, most Christians know little, if anything about it – what it is, or how it functions. Humanism is the primary modern philosophical enemy of Christianity. About the Book Originally published: London: Jonathan Cape, 1962. He recreated himself after this and though his work was great afterward, it didn't have the vitality of his early work. Watchmen - For me this series is his swan song or farewell to this era of his work. V For Vendetta - Like Miracleman and Swamp Thing, it's just an amazing read full of great moments and revelations. Some of the arcs are less than steller and that's way it is placed 2nd to Miracleman. Unfortunately I don't think it's consistent all the way through. Moore's second issue, #21, I consider my favorite single issue, and some of the arcs are stunning. Swamp Thing - This was the series that got me started on Moore and some of his favorite works are in this series. Every book in this series was as "Holey Shit!" moment for me. Miracleman - Especially the early Warrior episodes were full of amazing action and amazing revelation in every issue. I have to say that my top ten Moore stories are not based so much on craft but rather on sentiment and what they did and do mean to me.
